  • A gift at my back door

    IM001935

This lovely creature was on the screen when I looked out the back door. It has been several years since I have seen one. These, stick insects, preying mantis, bob white quail, whipoorwills, and cottontails are all things I remember seeing often as a kid, but rarely now. Maybe it's because I spend less time rummaging about outdoors with nothing to do but observe. Maybe they've been chased out by the growing population of suburbanites with tidy "Greenkeeper" lawns. Probably both, but at any rate, this is a rare treat.

A Luna Moth!  How excellent.  I would be so honored if such a beautiful moth decided my screen door was a worthy place to rest.  I agree with you - plenty of things that were common place as a kid are hard to find nowadays (I guess that means I am officially an old woman ).  In my backyard during childhood, butterflies were everywhere, and garden spiders.  Now we are excited to see a few  butterflies each summer.  All those lawn chemicals is my suspicion, too.

I hate to complain, but can you change the colour of your font? It's very hard to read against the blue, esp to us old folks.

I love the moth-we have found several in various weird places thru-out the years and they always get exclaimations of delight from us. I think it means you are lucky!

@nellinidaho - @k8tthelate - Y'know, I'm glad to find I'm growing old (er) in such good company. I think I've fixed the font/image contrast problem by fading the image. Let me know if it still doesn't work. --And thanks for sharing my excitement

Very nice surprise . . . for a second, I thought this was going to be about a present the cat hunted down for you! This was much more pleasant!

@jacksoncroons - It's been a while since we've seen any of those, too. Old Paddy cat is just too old. The kittens are still working on stable flies and grasshoppers. It's hilarious watching them stalk and pounce, and foreshadows of many proud hunter gifts, I do believe :)
